A Christmas Story

It is that time of the year again when a lot of people or practically the whole world celebrates a date of giving, merry making and all around good times for all. By jolly it’s Christmas yet again! Where we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ by giving presents, making ourselves look fat in the mirror (by consuming insane amount of foods) and praying. And if you’re here in the merry Philippines island lots of praying. I did mention this is a Christmas story after all. Well it’s more of an origin story of Christmas. Kind of like Batman origins (SPOILER ALERT!) where his parents got killed in the process ushering in the coolness of Batman.

Celebrating Christmas is actually a Pagan Holiday (not a ritual). Yup, it is a weeklong celebration of lawlessness celebrated between December 17 to 25. Did I mention “lawlessness”, yeah the parties were much more insane back in the day of Roman Pagan worship. They got drunk, caused property damage, went naked in the streets did some public fornication and singing. Those were the good old days. So the festival began when the Roman authorities chose “an enemy of the Roman people” to represent the “Lord of Misrule.”  After choosing said victim he or she was forced to indulge on food other physical pleasures (that means sex) throughout the week and at the final day they get to brutally murder the said victim believing that they will also destroy the forces of darkness (wow!).

That was insane, eating, drinking, sex everywhere and brutally murdering innocent people at the final day. So why did Christianity adopted this festival? Well it was more like a bribe to pagan worshippers. You see there weren’t a lot of Christian people in those times. And the best way to convert a lot of Pagan worshippers is by adopting their insane festivals to Christianity. And one of them is the Holiday of Saturnalia which I just mentioned in great detail.

So adapting the Holiday of Saturnalia is good or maybe great for Christians but there was a problem. That weeklong celebration doesn’t really have a Christian thing about it, so the Christian leaders have a major brainstorming weekend and made the conclusion of Saturnalia which is December 25 to be Jesus Christ birthday. So basically they lied to a lot of people, a tiny white lie.

There you have it. That is only the origin story of Christmas and not the amazing adventures of Christmas.
