How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Introduction: Laser hair removal is a procedure that removes hair from the body with the help of a long pulse laser. It is in business since 1997. It can only be operated by trained specialist or a doctor by using laser on shaved skin, which stops follicles from reproducing hair.  At average 6-8 shots with a break of 8-12 weeks are required to complete the job. One can have better results on lighter skins with dense hairs. Three to four sessions can minimize the density with a break of 10 to 12 weeks between each session.

Used by either sex, areas covering arms/underarm, legs, tummy, back, buttocks, upper body, thighs and face covering lips, cheeks neck and toes.

Commonly used hair removal lasers include Diode, Nd:YAG, Alexandrite and Intense Pulse Light systems (IPLs). For best results please consult your doctor.
LHR removes most of the hair but it can’t target the finer hair so one has to revisit the clinic after a period of 6-12 months to get treatments.
Cost of LHR varies from person to person and from package to package. Generally, costs per session are:

$50-150
$100-300
$200-500
Underarms
Upper lip
Chin
Regular bikini
Chest
Abdomen
Butt
Full face
Brazilian bikini
Half legs
Half arms
Back

It is not as painful as waxing with feeling of a rubber band snapping your skin as and when the laser is activated. Use anesthetic creams can minimize this feeling.

Side effects include Itching, redness for up to 3 days, swelling around mouth of follicle for up to 3 days and tingling or feeling of numbness.

Inappropriate use can cause crusting/scab formation, bruising, turning skin to purple color and temporary pigment change.

Avoid using wax, removing hair with root, epilate or any other method 6 weeks prior to the treatment and even during the treatment. One should shave the area 1 or 2 days prior to the treatment for best results. Ice packs or Aloe Vera gel can be used afterwards for soothing effects.

Hair shredding process can normally start after 3-10 days of treatment. Once it is completed one can enjoy hair free skins for several weeks. Revisit required after a gap of 8-12 weeks to focus newly grow hair to get a touchup treatment.

One should avoid treatment during excessive hair growth periods like pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, insulin treatment, thyroid problems, reactions to certain medications etc.
